MY DEAR NIGERIAN YOUTHS, BY PROF. ISA

MY DEAR NIGERIAN YOUTHS, BY PROF. ISA I am very angry and that is why I am addressing you. You are the source of my anger and I want to vent my spleen- maybe not at you directly- but at the arrogance of your ignorance. . You sit in front of a computer and rant all day through social media but with every click, you make money - not for yourself - but for Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook). With every megabyte of data you spend complaining and maligning, you make stupendous bucks for Etisalat, Glo and Airtel. Over the next two years, the number of Nigerian millionaires will jump by 47% but most likely you will not be among because you are too busy whining and complaining. And yet about 60% of Nigeria’s 170m population are below 35 years. Oh, what a waste! By the way, Mark Zuckerberg was 19 when he started Facebook. Africa’s youngest billionaire, Ashish Thakkar, is 31. He escaped from the Rwandan genocide and relocated to Uganda where he started an IT business. Collin Thornton, who made

Apostle Paul's Random Naija Survey

Image
Apostle Paul’s Random Naija Survey By Pius Adesanmi Apostle Paul was the Biblical equivalent of the Nigerian busybody. He was a prolific letter writer. A much better letter writer than President Obasanjo. Apostle Paul wrote his own letters internationally. There was no people he did not feel inclined to guide and advise via letters. He wrote to the Romans, the Corinthians, the Philippians, and the Galatians. Then he wrote to the Ephesians and the Thessalonians. Because he wrote so many letters to so many peoples, Apostle Paul often repeated or plagiarized himself. For instance, he gave the Thessalonians and the Ephesians the same advice: in all things, in all situations, give thanks and praise to God. In essence, no matter how worwor your situation is, find some wiggle room for praise. We are in agreement that President Buhari’s stubborn persistence on the Gulliver lane is an exercise in worwority. Last I heard about the Nigerian President, he had left Saudi Arabia for Qat

Omoyele Sowore: My Sahara story

Image
My SaharaReporters Story-Sowore He has been described as controversial, a political activist and his passion to see the Nigerian project work has inspired him to stand up against The Establishment in various ways most of his adult life. This also led to his founding an online news medium in a small room in Manhattan in the United States of America that has today become a household name, subscribed to by many all over the world. In a very interesting encounter The Interview had with Omoyele Sowore, founder of Sahara Reporters, he speaks about his days of student activism while at the University of Lagos, Sahara Reporters and the danger he has often had to face as he pushes on with his cause. What was on your mind when you started Sahara Reporters in 2006? The idea was inspired by citizen journalism that emerged out of anti-WTO (World Trade Organization) protests in Seattle, Washington in the US. I was totally taken by the fact that ordinary citizens could tell riveting and pow

Buhari: Where are the Ambassadors to USA and Britain?

"Nigerian diplomats often complain about the absence of policy briefs from Abuja. Under Buhari, there seems to be no change in the  position. If anything, it may have worsened. As part of Buhari’s foreign bustle, top Nigerian diplomats ought to be invited to Abuja for consultations so that they know how to help the government chart the new route forward, if there is one. You cannot be indifferent libraries and speak about being on the same page. If finding support for Nigeria’s anti-corruption offensive and economic recovery is our objective, for instance, all countries are important, but some are indispensable. Take the United Kingdom, for instance. Only recently, Paul Arkwright, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, told the News Agency of Nigeria of the  readiness of his country to repatriate various looted Nigerian funds being held there. "Clearly, there are legal requirements that we have to meet,” he said, adding: “We are working with the Nigerian Government

Pa Awolowo's travails

Image
NEVER, EVER LOOK DOWN ON ANYONE, especially those one with vision and plans. Jeremiah Oyeniyi Obafemi Awolowo is unarguably the most renowned Yoruba man after Oduduwa; He is a man of many parts. Below is a story of his determination to acquire a Law degree. He went to study law after 3 children and a wife at the age of 38, yet he was able to achieve a lot despite the seemingly insurmountable dds against him. An interesting part Awo's life was a loan request of £1,400 from Chief Timothy Adeola Odutola on March 25, 1943 , (the richest Ijebu man in those days), Awolowo promised to pay back by 1955. Odutola did not respond to his letter; after six weeks, he decided to approach Odutola in person, his request was not granted. After writing such a long letter, only to be snobbed, It must have been embarrassing for Mr. Awolowo, but he never gave up his ambition for this set back. By the way, Timothy Adeola Odutola, OBE, CFR, CON, the first president of the Manufacturers Associ

UPDATED: Reverend King sentenced to death by hanging, Supreme Court affirms The Supreme Court on Friday in Abuja affirmed the death sentence passed on the General-Overseer of Christian Praying Assembly, Chukwuemeka Ezeugo, popularly called “Rev. King”, over the brutal killing of a member of the church, Ann Uzoh. Delivering the judgment, Justice Sylvester Nguta, held that the convict’s appeal lacked merit. “The facts of the case could have been lifted from horror film and the court cannot but resolve all the 12 issues raised in this appeal against Ezeugo. “This appeal has no merit. The judgment of the Court of Appeal is hereby affirmed. “The prison sentence that was earlier handed based on the other five-count charge is no longer relevant in view of the death sentence passed on him. “The appellant, in his defence, claimed that the victims sustained the various injuries from an exploded generator within the church’s premises but failed to prove this defence,” Mr. Nguta said

FIFA elections: Gianni Infantino declared Winner

Image
FIFA⚽ Elections: Gianni Infantino Delcared Winner The FIFA Presidential elections came off today in Zurich to elect Blatter's replacement. Blatter, who led world football's governing body since 1998, stood down last year and was later banned from football for six years for corruption. The elections to decide the new president of world football's governing body passed the first round after no two-thirds resolution was found. So a second round was required to determine the new President.  The last time this happened was in 1974. Sexwale, however, dropped out of the race as the second round of voting was about to commence, leaving 4 candidates to vie for the position. And after 2 rounds of voting, as per simple majority, with 115 votes, the next FIFA President is Gianni Infantino.

The Need for President Buhari to stay at home

#BabaSitAtHome - The Need For President Buhari to stay at Home Last week and over the weekend, Twitter was awashed with tweets from Nigerians at home and abroad in response to different thought provoking trends. Among them were #BenBruceAt60, #BuyNaijaToGrowTheNaira, #LVGout etc. However, #WakaWakaBuhari and #NeedfulWaka commanded the highest number of tweets. Nigerians took turns to lampoon the President for travelling out of the country in his usual manner despite the weak and sick state of the economy. Although, persons believed to be members of the ruling party led a counter campaign tagged #NeedfulWaka, it didn't achieve desired results because it backfired. As if that was not enough, a list of countries the President has visited from May 2015 to February 2016 also circulated social space and platforms like Facebook and Whatsapp. They are attached below. COUNTRIES BUHARI HAS VISITED IN JUST NINE MONTHS (300 DAYS) IN OFFICE 1) Niger Republic (May 2015) 2) CHAD (June 2

WAEC Seized My English Result Twice - Patrick Obahiagbon

Image
WAEC Seized My English Result Twice – Patrick Obahiagbon Honourable Patrick Obahiagbon on an interview with Punch Newspaper.. Punch - Did you write exams in school in these big words? Hourable- I used such words very-very freely in my exams both at the secondary school and in my university and little wonder I had the misfortune of my English results being seized intermittently in my O’ Levels. WAEC released my results for the other subjects and withheld my English result. This happened for about three years. Twice, I passed the University Matriculation Examination but I could not proceed to the University because of my English results that were not released. At the end of the day, it was released after the third attempt. Punch - Why do you always use ‘big grammar’? Honourable- I am not really consensus ad idem with those who opine that my idiolect is advertently obfuscative. No no no, it’s just that I am in my elements when the colloquy has to do with the pax nigeriana of

Olajumoke Orisaguna: The Nigerian Cinderella By Reuben Abati

Image
About three weeks ago, 27-year old Olajumoke Orisaguna was a complete unknown on the streets of Lagos, hawking bread. A loaf of bread is about N100, and even with a full tray such as she carried in her first public embrace of fame, her whole ware for a day may not be more than N3,000, with daily profit between N300-N700. She had trained as a hair stylist, got married but had to leave her husband and a daughter back home in Ire, Osun state, to “hustle” as it were in Lagos. The life of a bread seller in Lagos is easily imaginable: exposure to the elements, to sundry abuse, including the possibility of being raped by unruly artisans and bachelors, who will offer to buy bread and something else along with it, if the hawker is willing. This was Olajumoke Orisaguna’s reality until she ran into TY Bello and Tinie Tempah and her life changed. Today, she has been enrolled as a model. Her story has appeared in all newspapers, on CNN, Huffington Post, and vi
