Kunle Adegunoye, the unlikely mathematics teacher

Kunle Adegunoye, the unlikely mathematics teacher.

My second coming to Olabayo group of schools was though not as triumphant as the first, it still in it own little way raised my hope for a growing science consumed man.

Before I joined the school as a class tutor, I used to believe in myself, boasting about how effective and efficient teacher I am. How colleagues, students and head teachers appreciate my teaching ethics and style. Little did I know that my application will earn me much more than I bargained for.

Teaching Chemistry and Junior Secondary school basic science was a norm and fun. Mathematics, oh no!! Absolutely not.

The Almighty mathematics has always indisputably carved out a niche for itself. It has never competed with physics, chemistry or biology in identifying what makes the fulcrum of science.

It has always been the friend most of us loved to have but cannot put up with its antics and theatrics. Of all the eight intelligences has  identified by  Gardner, the logical-mathematics intelligence happened to be one in which few possess.

When I was saddled with the responsibility of taking mathematics, I thought to myself, man can always adapt.

Man (I) before now has always loved the subject but never for once had good grades in them except for a fluke, a 70 on the dot once had in my first year introduction to calculus by Dr Julius  Ehito Osato. The struggles faced when fazed with the subject is enormous and it was a big factor in choosing my course during those years of Jamb registration.

Now, fast forward to January 2016 when teaching mathematics became a means to an end, I didn't know that it was a free gift any person would wish for. Indices, logarithms, Simultaneous equation and all starts with me. The moment one hears about, it can really wonder what it is all about but the reality is its real meaning is embedded within it and only individuals who can rack their
brains to further understand it and be in position to witness the fruits in it. I am one of those individuals who is now smiling because  the movement to unleash the mathematical genius in our children starts with me.

Isn't it fun taking up the garment of a messianic complex and seeing yourself as the change that has come to change their grades? For good?
